Coeliac disease or gluten sensitivity is a chronic, immunemediated, inflammatory disorder of the small intestine triggered by the ingestion of gluten (Barker and Liu 2008; Zawahir et al. 2009). Its overall prevalence varies between 0.4% and 1.3% in the childhood population (Rewers 2005).The concept of gluten ataxia is not accepted by all authors and is highly controversial. Children with coeliac disease have an increased risk of developing neurological complications during childhood, but the overall prevalence of neurological involvement in children is lower than in adults (Lionetti et al. 2010).
