Chapter 14 – Global Prognosis And Neuropsychological Outcome Of Lennox–Gastaut Syndrome

Lennox–Gastaut syndrome (LGS) is a severe and chronic epileptic encephalopathy with onset in early childhood. Following the medical thesis of Dr. Charlotte Dravet (1965), described in Epilepsia a childhood-onset epilepsy type characterized by the progressive appearance of several types of seizures (including tonic seizures particularly during sleep), associated with EEG tracings to an interictal pattern of diffuse spike–wave complexes and 10Hz discharges often translating tonic events during slow sleep and neurodevelopmental regression. Several publications followed and LGS was adopted by the International League Against Epilepsy Classification Commission in 1989. However, the nosological uncertainty surrounding the syndrome persisted and the term LGS is, even today, applied rather loosely.

Lieven Lagae is Professor of Paediatric Neurology at the University of Leuven, Belgium (KUL), Head of the Paediatric Neurology Department of the KUL University Hospitals, and Director of the Childhood Epilepsy Program at the KUL University Hospitals. He is the current President of the European Pediatric Neurology Society and serves as an elected Board Member of the International Child Neurology Association (ICNA). From 2004 to 2015 he was the Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Paediatric Neurology. His research interests include translational research in zebrafish models of epilepsy, new antiepileptic drugs for childhood epilepsy, brain stimulation and preventive treatment of epilepsy in tuberous sclerosis.
