Because of the same embryological origin (hindbrain), abnormalities of the brainstem (particularly of the pons and medulla oblongata) are almost always associated with cerebellar anomalies. Recently, Barkovich et al. classified the malformations that primarily affect the brainstem on the basis of the possible embryological pathomechanisms (Barkovich et al. 2007, 2009). The
authors proposed two embryological pathomechanisms: (1) abnormal brainstem segmentation and (2) abnormal cell migration, cell proliferation, or axon navigation (Barkovich et al. 2007, 2009).
