Medication for ADHD is most commonly with drugs that stimulate the sympathetic nervous system by various mechanisms. These include methylphenidate (release of catecholamines), amfetamines (release of catecholamines, inhibition of catecholamine and dopamine reuptake), which are grouped together as ‘stimulant medications’, and atomoxetine (inhibition of catecholamine reuptake), which is described as a non-stimulant. Small increases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heart rate are invariably reported with the use of stimulant medications and atomoxetine.
