Mac Keith Ethics User Guide
Welcome to our guide to the functionality of the online e-learning environment. Each page includes the main body text, accompanying video content to expand on the main content, and quiz questions to test your comprehension and also to invite your own personal response to the material.
You can navigate using the left-hand column menu, or by the navigation buttons at the bottom of the page, using “Mark Complete” to move forward. You can view your completion progress in the bar at the top of the screen or via your “User Account” profile viewable from the link at the top of the screen. You can navigate between your course modules by either clicking “Ethics in Child Health” for the main page, or “User Account” to view your module registrations.
You can also take notes using the “Take Notes” panel to the right of the screen, which are saved into your user profile and can be exported via your user profile. In your user profile you can also view your reflective responses to the red box quizzes and questions at the bottom of the page.
Click on the accordion items below to learn how to use the course to maximum effectiveness.
Navigation Between Course Modules
At the top of the screen click:
Ethics in Child Health > to go to the Ethics main page - you can also navigate to all modules from the table here
Learning Account > Here your courses are listed. Click to navigate into them.
At the end of each course module you will also be presented with a grid allowing you to move straight into your course modules.
Navigation Within Course Modules
You can move freely between any page in any course via the menus and navigation in your Learning Profile. You can read as much or as little as your time affords, and return at any time to read, engage in quizzes and reflective exercises, and watch the video content.
- Completion of the Quiz content in the red box at the bottom of each page will create a "Mark Complete" button which will record your results and allow you to proceed to the next page in the course module.
- At the very bottom of each page there are "Previous Page" and "Next Page" for free movement between pages in sequence.
- At the bottom of the overview page ("Topic") of each course module there is a table of "Topic content" allowing you to navigate to the individual numbered pages (this table also has red tick marks beside each page to show which you have and have not completed).
- The main means of free navigation between pages is the left-hand menu column where each page of the course module is listed.
Video Content
We have commissioned brand new video introductions, discussions and interviews with the editors of the original book title and other professionals and parties involved in the discussion of ethics in child health. There are also some other relevant clips and podcasts from the Mac Keith Press and DMCN archive. There are over thirty of these fascinating clips for you to watch.
Click on the embedded clip to play it. There are controls for pause, maximise to full screen and skipping. Subtitles can be toggled on and off. Clips cannot be downloaded. The running time/length of the clip is listed beside the title of the clip.
Red Box Questions / Quizzes
To facilitate a more interactive experience and greater engagement with the material, we have crafted a mixture of different exercises including comprehension quizzes and reflective assignments that encourage you to recall and build on your own experience and develop your practice.
At the top of the red box is a panel showing your progress through the course module ("topic"). Within the body of the red box are different kinds of exercise:
- Sliding choice - drag and drop the items into the order you choose
- Multiple choice quiz - select the correct answer or answers
- Text input / Essay box - Enter as much or as little text. PLEASE NOTE that these prompts can be quite challenging so try not to get too bogged down in crafting a response; you are allowed to write as much or as little as you like. The main thing is just to get you thinking. Sometimes it is interesting to write an initial response, then come back later with more knowledge and compare your responses before and after.
At the bottom of the red box you can click "Hint" to reveal the answer or hint to help complete the question.
When you're ready, clicking "Check" will reveal whether you are correct or incorrect. If there is no correct answer, it will allow you to move to the next question by clicking "Next"
Click "Finish Quiz" to complete, then click "Mark Complete" to record your progress to your profile and move to the next page.
You can "View Questions" to see your answers immediately, and "Restart Quiz" to go back and try again.
The text of your reflective answers is saved in your profile (see the next accordion item to learn how to view your text).
How Do I View My Quiz Essay Question Personal Responses?
Click on "Learning Account" at the top of the page to navigate to your User Account. Click the "Expand All" button at the top of the table of "Your Courses" or on the red button beside the specific course you wish to look at. The table will expand to show a table of "Quizzes" simply listing the quizzes you have completed but allowing you to navigate to them as their own webpage. The table also shows your "Essays" in a grey box. Click on the text of the question to be taken to a page showing the text you have entered.
We have constructed a process whereby "Essay" content can be stored in a spreadsheet and subsequently emailed to the user, but this is not active at present. In the mean time, your 'essay' content is securely stored to your profile and can be emailed to you upon request. Just contact us at [email protected].
Take Notes
Click on the red "Take Notes" widget at the right hand side of the page to bring up the note-taking window. Click the white panel below the "Notes" frame to save your note (it will also be autosaved). There are also buttons to print and to export to Word.
All of your notes are listed and accessible from your User Account (click "Learning Account" at the top of the page). They can all be viewed, printed,. exported or deleted.
References & Footnotes
Each course module has its own page of references to authors and texts referenced in the text, with external links to online content.
Sometimes descriptive footnotes can be read where there is a number (e.g. "1") which can be hovered over to view the text.
Search
In your User Account profile page (Click "Learning Account" at the top of the page) the right hand column has a Search box that will allow you to enter a term that will list pages in your courses that include that search term.
Learning Account
Your E-learning User Account profile page lists which courses you have subscribed to and your progress. You can navigate between courses via the table, and view your quiz progress and essay submissions. You can view and download your Notes, and access a contact link and our feedback form.
